This has been the bane of my palate since I landed in L.A. 25 years ago. Yes, 25 years ago. Come September.
Anyway, as long as I've lived here, I have not once ... not ONCE! ... encountered a wing restaurant that served honey mustard wings. And I've been bamboozled by it for that entire quarter century.
For background, back in my hometown of Charlotte, N.C., there is (or was, I have no idea whether it's still there) a sports bar of sorts called The Graduate that had three kinds of wings: hot, barbecue and honey mustard. As far I was concerned, these were the three fundamental flavors any self-respecting wing joint would offer before getting into anything more exotic.
And yet, here in L.A, honey mustard wings remain an unheard-of delicacy not once imagined by a single restauranteur. The closest thing I've yet experienced is the new Buffalo Wild Wings Golden Fire flavor, which is very, very good, but still not true blue (true yellow?) honey mustard.
To make matters even more confounding, many, MANY wing spots offer honey mustard SAUCE on the side. I'd go as far as to say that they all do. But apparently not a one of them has at any point had the bright idea to put said sauce on said wings.
I don't know what to do anymore. This is beyond my comprehension. It's a mystery for the ages.
And on that note, I'm gonna go get me some of them Golden Fire wings.
